Creativity

16 Jun 2015

You are creative.

Maybe you don’t think you are, but you are actually a very creative person.

If you’re like me, you were intimidated by some classmates in elementary school named Laura or Scottie who seemed to draw like a pro. Not only were they polite, and brilliant, but they seemed so incredibly creative.

For me, it was Laura, the pastor’s daughter at the parochial elementary school I attended.

When people around us are recognized as smart or creative, is sends a not-so-subtle message that you’re NOT!

Comparing ourselves to others is a natural social phenomenon, yet it is often unhelpful.

So back to creativity.

How do I know you are creative? It’s because science and religion point to you being both FROM and PART OF the vast universe.

The nature we are part of is full of magnificent wonder. Birds, waves, animal behavior, the formation of storms, the regeneration of life…it’s all most incredible.

You are made of the same stuff, except are even more. You have intelligence, communication skills, reasoning, emotion and so many other attributes that are not less than the rest of the world, they are more!

Unlike the plants and animals, you were actually made in the likeness of the Divine—the intimate intelligence and creativity of the universe.

Just think about that for a moment. You are actually a descendant of, but you also share the DNA of the creative force of our universe and beyond.

So that’s pretty cool, right?

NO, that’s FREAKIN’ AMAZING!

That means you have the ability to be remarkable.

I’ve found that creativity manifests itself in surprising ways.

Though you may not be able to paint, sculpt or even create a gorgeous garden, you are creative.

Think about the times you were financially challenged and made an amazing meal.

Or you told a story like nobody ever told it before.

You are creative.

I know some engineers, who some people might think of as creatively-challenged. Yet they are some of the most creative people I know. They can problem-solve a difficult situation. They can fix a broken machine. They can even invent new devices to solve a dilemma—one that helps people and makes the world a little better place.

You may or may not be an idea person. Research surrounding the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (personality profile) says that some of us have a lot of ideas. Folks labeled as iNtuitive live in the realm of ideas and the future. They sometimes have so many ideas, they could never carry out them all. Others are Sensors; they live in the here and how and see the details of life. They many not have so many ideas, but they are awesome at actually getting things done.

No matter what your personality, I encourage you to think about how much you’re living creatively, whether the ideas are yours or not.

The fact is, even if you’re out of touch with your creative side, you have it in you; maybe it’s just been repressed for awhile.

What is something you’ve done in the past that gave you an insatiable sense of fulfillment? The way you blessed a friend? How you set a table for guests? How you decorated your house?

Consider what you might think about and do in the next week that will nurture your creative side.

I think the Divine intends us to live up to our potential. And our potential certainly includes creativity.

It’s guaranteed to feed your soul and give live to those around you.
